ABEL LÓPEZ

BIOGRAPHY

Abel López was born in Havana, Cuba in 1985. He graduated from the José Antonio Díaz Peláez Visual Arts Experimental Center in 1999 and received his BFA from San Alejandro Fine Arts Academy, Havana, Cuba in 2004.

Using passé, analog technology as his substrate, be it vinyl records, video game cartridges or circuit boards, Abel creates playful assemblages as a commentary on the things we want, what makes us happy and the ‘status’ achieved by possessing these items. His constructions almost feel like religious icons of consumerist fetishization without being overly serious or precious.

My work aims to translate old consumer objects into their appropriate modern context and allow people to view them in both arenas. I decontextualize old consumer objects and give them a special, iconic and unique character. I create a decorative environment for them to look visually and conceptually new.

-Abel López

His work has been included in both group and personal exhibitions in Cuba, Europe and the United States, with a recent solo exhibition at ArteMorfosis - Galería de Arte Cubano in Zürich.

The artist currently lives and works in Havana, Cuba.
